Silly Wishlist Time!

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

This is a tough one, because I tend to be more of a passive enjoyer of whatever joy happens across my reading page, and less an active seeker of my own, but here we go:

1) Icons!!! I've been a major icon addict since the very, very early days of LJ, and that has not changed one atom over the years. My fandoms are listed on my Sticky Post, and I'd be deliriously happy to see icons (or recs for icon posts!) for any of them, especially the less popular ones.

2) On a much more materialistic (but very similar) notes if anyone happens to have any leftover DW points they're not planning to use from the December promo, icon slots!

3) On an also-similar note... moodthemes! I don't mean "please go out and create 132 unique pictures just for me" (though feel free to do so if you want!)... but they're getting harder and harder to find, outside of the wonderful [community profile] moodthemeinayear challenge, so this is more a request / invitation to show off and share some of your current or past favourites, or share any hidden stashes you may have of now-vanished treasures lost from Ye Olde LJ Days.

4) Suggestions for ways to maintain posting momentum once Snowflake is over. I'm hoping to post writing check-ins now and then to document my progress on [community profile] getyourwordsout, but I very, very rarely have any life updates or reading / watching logs to fall back on, so I tend to depend on events like Snowflake or questionnaire-type memes to give me talking points. So, pointers / suggestions for ways to keep posting for the chronically terrible-at-posting?

There are many ways to accomplish this. The most important thing for success is simply to try many different things, note what works for you, and when something doesn't work just drop it and try a new thing. Some possibilities include...

* Decide how often you'd like to post. Daily, weekly, monthly? Then choose some things to fill that frequency. Recurring Posts has ideas for days of the week, monthly, and other post themes. Frex, you might do Monday Update, WIP Wednesday, and [community profile] thefridayfive.

* Schedule reminders. I write my recurring posts in a desktop calendar, or I'd never remember them all. Another paper option is a bullet journal; there [community profile] goals_on_dw has a list of free printable trackers. Some folks prefer a to-do list app or calendar app.

* Blogging events. Options include [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge for archiving your meta or posting new meta, Three Weeks for Dreamwidth (April 25-May 15) for blogging here every day, and [community profile] sunshine_revival for fannish interaction in summer.

* Challenges. [community profile] goals_on_dw has challenge posts for Fannish 50, Arts and Crafts, Nature, Reading, and Writing among others. Some of these are year-long, others monthly or seasonal. Lots of folks like to post their progress or "thing a day" entries.

* Join communities with check-in or gather posts. There are some in Most Useful Communities. [community profile] newcomers has lists of Daily, Weekly, and Monthly options.

* Get a checklist of talking points, questions, or things to post about. Important tip: Avoid making all of them long posts. It's very convenient to have some that you just copy-paste or that need only quick answers. Some ideas:
-- 90 Journal Prompts You Haven’t Heard Before
-- 1000 Amazing Blog Post Ideas For Bloggers Of All Niches
-- A Huge List of Common Themes
-- Philosophical Questions
-- The Ultimate List of 87+ Creative Blog Post Ideas
-- The Ultimate List of 1000+ Hobbies to Try
-- Improving Community in Fandom includes a list of fannish quizzes.

* Make a list of websites about your favorite topics that update frequently with news or other interesting posts. "Here's a link to a cool thing I found" is among the most popular quickie posts. I do it so often that I have readers who basically use me as a newsfeed.

* Make friends. This one is primarily about motivation; when you have plenty of friends who post regularly on a platform, you'll want to check it often enough to keep up with them. Depending on the type of friends, you may also get link posts of the "Go check out X by Y!" type.

* Watch for ideas from other bloggers. Some of the copy-paste or question list posts that you see in communities or individual journals may be things you'd like to try in your own blog.

>> What an incredible and thorough resource this comment is -- I can't thank you enough for putting it all together! <<

*bow, flourish* Happy to be of service!

I usually get a few good articles out of this challenge. Any wish that relies on information is typically one I can grant. I tidied this up and made it a post for easier bookmarking:

How to Post Frequently on Dreamwidth

>>This, especially, is such a good piece of advice, and one I've fallen down on many times before... <<

Yeah, last year's Hobbies theme was fun but way too much work. This year I'm doing Community Thursdays which is much more flexible.

>>Again, thank you so much for compiling all that -- there's so much useful stuff here, I really, really appreciate it.<<

You're welcome! I want people to be able to blog here and enjoy it.

aww I'm recognizing so many of your icons from the LJ era <3

I have some Xena and Buffyverse icons up.

3. I tried to get folks to link their saved themes at [community profile] moodthemes a couple years back, but sadly no takers. I really would like to create a couple myself, since the one I'd used since my LJ days went poof. Moodthemes are such a good!
